the xp disk i am trying to reinstall from is only sp1, but the existing windows partition that i hoped to boot into safe mode with is sp2. It required the SATA Controller driver on the XP disk. It may be an ACPI or IRQ issue, so check your BIOS settings for IRQ allocation. It works after change the SATA into compatibility mode. X - Hello!
